What the 8th grade has been up to so far this term!
The 8th grade has been doing a lot this term in art! They began the term with a painting project. We first introduced them to gouache paint and talked about what they would be painting. We wanted the students to have some kind of a connection to their work, so we asked students to think about a ladnscape or a place that has some connection to them to paint. They could either bring in their own photo or they could find an image of it offline. The results were quite beautiful! Check out some of their finished paintings below!
First some practice with the gouache paint as this was for the most part everyone's first time working with this kind of paint!
Next, students first sketched their images onto paper and then began with washes of background colors to build up their layers. Check out some in progress shots of students' paintings!

Moving on to digital arts and media!
After our painting project, we moved onto our digital art project where students used our ipads and different photo editing apps to convey a message through photography and layers! We briefly introduced them to artist JR, a street artist who is internationally known for his amazing photography / public art installations. The main message we wanted students to take away from artist JR was how to convey a message through art, specifically photography. We then looked at our pinterest page on photoshop art and talked about elements of photography. We asked students to begin taking photographs outside of school and practicing some of the techniques they were learning about in class.
After this, we asked students to write a brief paragraph about something they stand for or believe in, something that is important to them that they would want to create their digital piece about. Students would have to take their own photographs and think about metaphor and symbolism as a way to convey their message about what they stand for or believe in. They had to use layers somehow and had to use several photos in their pieces. The results came out really amazing, check out some of their finished digital pieces using the iPad apps Moldiv, Paper 53, Photoshop Express and more.
